Bowen Therapy

Gentle moves. Profound results.

Bowen Therapy is a unique non intrusive complementary hands-on pain management therapy/bodywork that acts upon the nervous system and addresses the root cause of the pain.

Bowen Therapy utilizes gentle moves over precise points of the body and prompts the body’s innate ability to relieve pain, restriction and imbalance without the need for deep, manipulative or forceful treatment.

While addressing various health concerns, Bowen Therapy also helps to reduce anxiety and stress levels. It also helps to create symmetry and balance of the body.

Bowen Therapy treatment is pleasant – therapists use light, cross-fibre manoeuvres of muscle, tendon or ligament with no forceful manipulation. Treatment is usually done through the light clothes, no lotions or oils are used. There is no cracking, probing or other kind of forceful manipulation as our bodies do not always need rough manipulations in order to be healed.

Bowen therapy is not Massage, Acupressure or Shiatsu.

Due to the gentle nature of the therapy, it can be used on anyone, including newborns, seniors and pregnant women. Bowen Therapy can address a variety of conditions, both chronic and acute.

After getting better, people often don’t need maintenance visits for many years unless a new issue arises.

Frequently people turn to Bowen therapy after hearing about positive outcomes of the treatments from others or sometimes after trying some other forms of treatments.

Understanding Bowen Therapy: Your FAQs

To provide you with clarity, we've answered the most common questions we receive about this unique and effective technique, from what a treatment feels like to the conditions it can help.

Bowen Therapy can assist with a variety of concerns, not limited to the musculoskeletal system. These include:

  • Back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Headaches
  • TMJ issues
  • Sports injuries
  • Digestive problems
  • Breathing problems
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Postural imbalances
  • Certain forms of scoliosis (subject to assessment)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Colic or unsettled behavior in newborns
  • Torticollis in infants

At the beginning of a session, a comprehensive health history is taken, and an assessment is performed to identify the root of your health concerns. This is followed by a brief consult where the treatment plan is discussed and tailored to your needs. During the session, while you are comfortably lying on the massage table (no need to undress), the therapist uses gentle “moves” with fingers and thumbs on specific points of the body, following patterns based on the assessment, with short pauses to allow your body to respond.

Post-session tip: Drink water, move, and allow your body time to respond.

Yes. Bowen Therapy is gentle enough even for new injuries, including whiplash or swollen tissue. In fact, early treatment can help the body recover more efficiently. The number of sessions needed varies depending on individual circumstances. It is also safe for clients of all ages — from newborns to seniors, including expectant mothers. Yuliana’s youngest client was just two weeks old, and her most senior client recently turned 93.

Our therapist Yuliana is trained in advanced Bowen Technique and often combines it with her expertise in applied musculoskeletal methods and neuromuscular optimization. Each session is tailored to your individual situation based on assessment and health history. When needed, muscle testing may also be performed to help guide treatment.

Yes. Medications and exercise are generally fine alongside Bowen Therapy. It is recommended to leave a 5–7 day gap between Bowen and other bodywork (massage, chiropractic, physiotherapy, osteopathy) so your body can work on processing and integrating the treatment.

“I came to Yuliana for carpal tunnel because driving, working, and even sleeping had become so difficult. I didn’t know much about Bowen Therapy, but I decided to give it a try — and I’m so glad I did. It’s been almost a year since my last session, and I’m still completely pain-free!”

Carpal Tunnel Relief with Bowen Therapy

"IIbring my whole family to Belmont Natural Health for Bowen Therapy. Yuliana helped my wife with acute back pain, and my daughters always look forward to their sessions. She’s treated them for headaches, knee and ankle pain, as well as tummy issues, all with Bowen Therapy. We drive 45 minutes from out of town to see her. We highly recommend her for Bowen Therapy in Kitchener-Waterloo and beyond."
